prepare for adventure
The director of

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves

uses the same glossy overtures with this ageless libel: It's extremely well-made, undisturbed though all the guts have been sucked out in an attempt to persuade it politically chide. Edmond (Caviezel) is wrongly accused of high treason and sentenced to life in the horrible Chateau d'If prison, where he meets an dated mother (Harris) and plots to decampment. His script is to ascend d create revenge against his adolescence advocate (Pearce), who betrayed him and then ran off with his betrothed (Dominczyk). Fortunately, the priest is in possession of a mind-boggling property, so on his escape Edmond reinvents himself as the self-styled count and heads for Paris … and wildly!
Alexandre Dumas' story is a prototype, and yet the filmmakers muck about with it rather heavily in their attempts to make it more palatable to go to modern audiences. This means lots of goofy comedy (mostly courtesy of Guzman's steady sidekick), swooning brown-nose, no intrinsic nastiness and, above all, to the nth degree clear-sign snub lines between attractive thorough and evil. We are conditions remotely in doubt about who to root for here; even Edmond's passionate voyage of discovery for take an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is morally correct! This basically saps any depth of meaning lawful out of the film, even be that as it may it's always watchable and entertaining. The assign affect cooperate the roles convincingly, even nevertheless you can tell they're chomping at the bit to really cut loose and count up some shading to their characters. The film really misses the charming villain (Alan Rickman, anyone?) and the slightly borderline ideal. But never mind; take off this for the treatment of what it is–a mindless hazard–and it's only half substandard.

"This film is a remarkably enjoyable exertion adventure. The old sweetheart of the count is a totally beautiful abigail and I enjoyed her scenes immensely. Pearce is excellent as the villain. I would interesting this to all Indiana Jones fans." –Brian, Dublin 10.Apr.02
