When the to some degree isolated line inhabited by Mohammad B and his family is commandeered by an Israeli army outfit, reactions deviate as to how to respond to the harsh, humiliating restrictions and nightly imprisonment imposed by Commander Ofer and his soldiers. Mohammad, a teacher, insists they stay in their nursing home and just execute orders until the troops push; his little woman wants to begin for all to see, while the reactions of the kids – from infants to a daughter of university maturity – series from entrancement to the core fear to feisty, parallel with fatal resistance. The progeny troops, meanwhile, also have opposite involved feelings, some clearly unhappy at Ofer’s devastating and threatening treatment of their certain of Palestinian hosts, others getting off, perhaps, on their whereabouts of power, and some so complacent at being armed that they don’t realise how deeply far downwards they’re hated.
Set in Palestine but made in Italy (not that you’d know it), this nonpareil, suspenseful acting deploys the family members’ relationships both with an individual another and with their oppressors to review – with eloquence and dramatic efficacy – a range of issues to do with submission and resisters. Robust performances and submit-held camerawork turn the fog a raw immediacy, and black and fair-skinned moralising is carefully avoided; it’s without delay made uncloudy that in such a location there are no winners, only losers. At the same time, the film does find room for wait – some characters at least are aware that violence can not ever be anything but a last, rash resort that usually solves nothing. Sturdy stuff, but very mindful of, too.
